In 1927, the Mille Miglia departed from Brescia in northern Italy — a public road race whose name, 'a thousand miles', described a roughly 1,600-kilometre traverse of the Italian peninsula. Competitors drove roads that were barely paved, cheered through villages by locals lining the route. Some historians have called it not a race but a pilgrimage. The emotion Italians pour into motorsport is inseparable from a pride in traversing their own land in a machine of their own choosing.
