Bates Brothers Share a Podium — Pedder Takes ARC Round 2 Western Australia
World Stage Journal
Scott Pedder claims his second win of the season in Western Australia as Harry and Lewis Bates share the podium in second and third — the brothers' journey beyond their father Neil's five-title shadow continues
At the Plant Hire Forest Rally in Busselton and Nannup, Western Australia, on May 22–24, Scott Pedder claimed overall victory. Behind him, a moment the ARC has rarely produced: Lewis Bates second, Harry Bates third — sons of five-time champion Neil Bates standing on the same podium together.
Scott Pedder and co-driver Glenn MacNeall took overall victory at ARC Round 2, the Plant Hire Forest Rally in Busselton and Nannup, Western Australia, on May 22–24. Lewis Bates and Anthony McLaughlin second, Harry Bates and Coral Taylor third — sons of five-time ARC champion Neil Bates on the same podium. Harry had dominated Round 1 in Queensland, winning eleven of fifteen stages. In Western Australia, Lewis pushed him down a step. Full analysis reserved for subscribers.
■ The Australian Rally Championship: Eucalyptus Forests, Six States, and the World's Most Isolated Title Fight
The ARC operates under FIA regulations with Rally2-specification machinery — architecturally identical to the cars competing at WRC level. What the ARC lacks is not quality but visibility. The fine white dust of the Western Australian plantation forests creates a lottery in which start position carries genuine competitive significance.
■ Harry Bates: The Weight of Five Championships
Harry Bates was born in 1997, son of five-time ARC champion Neil Bates. Round 1 in Queensland: eleven stage wins from fifteen alongside co-driver Coral Taylor. Round 2 in Western Australia: third place — still in the championship lead, but two competitors between himself and the top step for the first time this year.
■ Lewis Bates: A Different Answer to the Same Question
Lewis Bates, born 2002, five years after Harry. His second place alongside co-driver Anthony McLaughlin at Round 2 came in forest stages that demanded patience and precision equally. Lewis delivered both. The brothers on the same podium — two drivers with the same name and background, finding different answers to the same competitive questions.
