The Road to Dakar 2027 — Asian Teams in Preparation and the Reality of Entry
Entry cases from South Korea, China, and Japan. The Production class as a gateway, and the reality of funding and support infrastructure
Teams preparing to enter the 2027 Dakar Rally from across Asia are quietly building their campaigns. While WRC-level entries draw the headlines, crews from South Korea, China, and Japan with limited cross-country experience are approaching the entry gate through the Production class. WSJ investigates the realities of preparation and the barriers to entry.
Entry to the Dakar Rally is shifting from impossible dream to strategically achievable objective for a segment of Asian teams. The critical enabler is the Production class — T3 and T4 — which sits below the headline T1 hybrid category. Where a T1 hybrid vehicle represents an investment of several hundred million yen, a T4 production four-wheel entry built on a production SUV can be assembled for approximately 30 to 50 million yen.
