Dakar Rally 2027 Preview — New Regulations and the Full Entry Picture
Saudi Arabia retained as host; hybrid mandate looms. Factory strategies begin to diverge
The shape of the 2027 Dakar Rally is coming into focus. The ASO has released details of a new hybrid-recommended class, and factory teams are formulating their responses. Saudi Arabia remains confirmed as the host nation, with the route centred on the Rub' al Khali desert in the south.
The framework announced by the ASO for the 2027 event reveals that the principal change in the four-wheel car category is the introduction of the T1+ Hybrid class. The existing T1 class continues unchanged for petrol and diesel vehicles, but T1+ mandates a hybrid configuration with an electric motor on the front axle, and the power ceiling is raised. The ASO has indicated it will grant T1+ entries a start-order advantage — priority road position on desert stages — effectively incentivising the switch to hybrid.
