The End of WRX — World Rallycross Downsizes to Euro RX, a New Era Begins

The FIA World Rallycross Championship launched in 2014 and ran events across Europe, North America and Asia. At its peak, names like Petter Solberg and Andreas Bakkerud contested the title in 600-plus horsepower Supercars capable of 0–100 km/h in under two seconds. In recent years, however, a succession of promoter changes, financial difficulties and the mounting cost of electrification made a global series increasingly unviable.

The Euro RX relaunch in 2026 restructures the series around a European calendar. The opener in Latvia attracted a strong entry list, with Johan Kristoffersson demonstrating why he remains the benchmark in the category with a dominant win. Bakkerud responded with victory in Hungary, setting up what promises to be a competitive season. Round 3 is scheduled for Höljes, Sweden on July 4–5.

Opinion is divided on what the shift from WRX to Euro RX means for rallycross. Some see it as a healthy return to European roots, allowing the series to reconnect with its most passionate fanbase. Others point to significant risks: the loss of a global platform reduces sponsorship appeal and media reach.

Rallycross retains its core spectacle — joker laps, multi-car starts, and mixed-surface circuits. None of that changes under Euro RX. Whether the series can grow into a new chapter or faces further contraction will become clearer by the end of this inaugural European season.

The financial troubles that brought down WRX have a clear origin: the change of promoter between 2019 and 2022 fundamentally weakened the series' negotiating position on broadcast rights. The transition from a motorsport-specialist promoter to a general sports events company coincided with a significant reduction in both linear television reach and digital streaming presence. On electrification costs, teams reported in 2023 and 2024 that EXTREME-E-level battery technology, while technically viable, could not be deployed at a cost consistent with maintaining the ticket prices and entry fees that make grassroots rallycross commercially sustainable. That conclusion became the final trigger for the decision to step down from world championship status.

In viewership terms, the contrast between WRX and Euro RX is stark. The 2024 WRX season attracted an estimated 18 million global viewers across all platforms. Euro RX's first-year projections target approximately 6 million — concentrated in Europe. Industry analysts estimate that the loss of a global media platform reduces per-contract sponsor value by 40 to 60 percent. However, the counterargument is genuine: proximity to the core European fanbase improves ticket revenue, merchandise sales and regional sponsor conversion rates in ways a global series cannot replicate.

The long-term viability of rallycross depends heavily on how the Jakarta World Cup performs in December. The architecture of Euro RX plus a standalone Asian World Cup closely resembles the structure that Formula E used in its early years — a European core complemented by single-destination world events. If Jakarta exceeds attendance and broadcast projections, the path opens for World Cup expansion to Japan, South Korea and the Middle East in 2027 and beyond. That outcome would effectively give rallycross a global footprint again without the operating costs that sank WRX.
