Kielder Forest in Northumberland is the largest planted forest in England, its narrow forest roads forming a complex network of gravel and mud stages. June in northern England is far from reliable — overnight rain on Saturday transformed Sunday's stages into significantly more slippery conditions than the morning crews had faced.

Local favourite John McFall had led after day one with a string of competitive stage times. But Edwards read the changing surface well from the first Sunday stage. 'The rain last night was an opportunity,' he explained. 'I knew if I could adapt to the conditions faster than John, I had a chance.' He backed his instinct with best time on all three Sunday stages, eventually winning by 14.7 seconds.

The BRC operates differently from the WRC: it is a domestic championship where corporate sponsors and individual drivers are closely intertwined. Many competitors fund their seasons by securing personal sponsorship deals, working within tight budgets to complete a full campaign. Edwards himself is a former WRC competitor who has chosen the BRC as his primary arena while also mentoring younger talent.

Four rounds remain in the 2026 BRC season. The next event is the Manx Rally on the Isle of Man in August, switching the championship to tarmac. The driver most capable of accumulating points across both gravel and asphalt will most likely lift the title.
