APRC Round 2 — Kadur Benefits from Gill's Retirement to Win 49th South India Rally in Chennai Heat

World Stage Journal
Karna Kadur and Kumar Ramaswamy overcame a turbo failure scare to claim the APRC and INRC double in Madras
The 49th South India Rally, held April 17–19 at Madras International Circuit outside Chennai, served as both Round 2 of the FIA Asia-Pacific Rally Championship and Round 1 of the Indian National Rally Championship. Karna Kadur survived a sudden loss of turbo power on the final day to claim victory — his fortunes aided by the retirement of three-time APRC champion Gaurav Gill, who had held a lead before suffering his own mechanical failure.
The South India Rally is one of the longest-running events in the Asia-Pacific rally calendar. The 49th edition used a mixed gravel and tarmac route around Madras International Circuit, a modern motorsport facility on the outskirts of Chennai. April in southern India means temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius — the demands on cooling systems and tyres are unlike any rally in the northern hemisphere.
Kadur's turbo lost power midway through the final day's second stage, costing him nearly a minute and seemingly ending any chance of victory. But in the same stage, championship leader Gaurav Gill — a three-time APRC champion — was halted by his own mechanical problem and retired from the lead. 'Honestly, I thought it was over,' Kadur said at the finish. 'When the turbo went, my mind went blank.'
Jeet Jabhakh and co-driver Musa Sherif finished second. Third went to Spain's Edgar Vigo Lopez and Fatima Ameneiro Teijeiro — a touring crew who had made the journey to Asia and ended up on the podium in an unexpected result that drew attention across social media.
The victory was a historic first APRC win for Arka Motorsports, Kadur's Indian-based squad. The dual-title format — combining the APRC and the INRC on a single event — reflects how India's motorsport scene is steadily aligning with international standards. Gill's response at the next round will be closely watched.
A technical note on Kadur's turbo problem is worth adding. The April conditions in Chennai — temperatures between 35 and 38 degrees Celsius, humidity around 70 percent — place heat loads on intercoolers two to three times higher than a typical ERC or WRC venue. The Škoda Fabia Rally2's turbo unit is rated to extract more than 300 horsepower at peak output, but the relatively low-speed, mixed-surface stages around Madras create conditions where cooling cannot keep pace with thermal load. Kadur's 'turbo failure' was most likely a sustained power loss from overheating rather than a catastrophic component failure — the car remained mobile throughout, which would not have been possible with a complete turbo seizure.
On the championship standings at the APRC level after South India: Kadur leads on 45 points; Gill, retired, holds zero from this round; Edgar Vigo Lopez of Spain sits third on 28 points. However, APRC point eligibility varies by registration category, and a full-distance finish by Gill at Round 3 in May could yield up to 30 points. Kadur's lead is more fragile than the raw number suggests.
A broader view of the Indian motorsport market context matters here. India's population of 1.4 billion makes it one of the world's largest two-wheel racing markets, but four-wheel rally followings remain limited to a dedicated core. Sustaining APRC rounds at a facility like Madras International Circuit is increasingly valued by manufacturers as a long-term brand-marketing investment linked to passenger car sales rather than a pure sporting budget line. Arka Motorsports' historic win — an Indian team, at an Indian event, in a global championship — has the potential to accelerate that market development in ways that manufacturer campaigns alone cannot achieve.
