Electric Motorsport Today — Formula E Season 12 in Review
Gen3 Evo Refinements, Shifting Team Power, and the Question of Coexistence with Combustion Categories
Formula E Season 12 in 2026 entered a period of technical maturity as the second year of Gen3 Evo regulations. The 350kW machines contesting street circuits around the world are producing new viewership data that speaks to a genuine coming-of-age for electric motorsport. At the same time, intensifying audience competition with WRC, Formula 1, and Dakar means coexistence with combustion categories is not straightforward.
The Gen3 Evo regulations, introduced in 2025, entered their second year in Season 12. Material changes from the previous season include an improvement to front motor regeneration efficiency — from 200kW to 220kW maximum — and the standardisation of the battery management system control algorithm. The latter measure was implemented by series promoter ABB to reduce the software-derived performance gaps that had advantaged certain teams over the preceding seasons.
