Gravel Burning in WRC's Shadow — ERC and the National Rally Scene in 2026
Entry costs, team structures, emerging youth — after World RX's dissolution, European gravel rally is deepening rather than declining
While the FIA World Rallycross Championship closed after 2025, the ERC — sitting directly beside WRC in the European rally ecosystem — is quietly consolidating its position. Six rounds from Podgorica to Lousada, Portugal: the sound of Rally2 machinery cutting through gravel does not stop in 2026. World Stage Journal examines the depths of European gravel rally, hidden beneath the WRC broadcast.
The 2026 ERC season runs to six rounds, opening in May at the Latvia Rally and closing in September at Lousada, Portugal. The dominant machinery is FIA Rally2 — successor to the R5 class — with three-way competition between the Skoda Fabia RS Rally2, Hyundai i20N Rally2, and Ford Puma Rally2 forming the core of the championship battles.
