European EV Rallycross 2026: The Mixed-Grid Experiment
RX2e class expansion and what the lap data actually reveals about electric versus combustion performance
The 2026 European Rallycross Championship saw RX2e class entries grow 38 per cent year-on-year, with selected rounds trialling a mixed-grid format placing electric vehicles and conventional combustion cars on the same course.
RX2e is an FIA-sanctioned 250kW electric rallycross specification introduced in 2022. Participating teams reached 22 across Europe in 2026. The mixed-grid format trialled at Mettet (Belgium) and Höljes (Sweden) placed RX2e and SuperCar class cars in the same heats. RX2e best laps averaged 2.8 per cent slower than SuperCar. 67 per cent of surveyed spectators supported continuing the format; 26 per cent cited the absence of engine sound as a negative.
